For centuries the Maya tracked the paths of Venus and Mars, filled codices with calendar tables and built coronations, monuments and religious festivals around them. Yet the minds behind these demanding calculations stayed in the shadows: unlike Babylonian or Greek scholars, not a single Maya mathematician had ever been found to have signed his work. Names in the hieroglyphs almost always belonged to rulers.
That has now changed. A team led by Franco D. Rossi of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has reconstructed and translated eleven hieroglyphs in a small building at the ruined city of Xultun, uncovered in 2010. They attribute an exceptional calculation to a specific person – a scholar named Sak Tahn Waax, "White-chested Fox". It is the only known case in which the intellectual work of an individual Maya mathematician is explicitly tied to a name.
A workshop of the star-reckoners
The walls of the chamber were covered with more than 50 tiny texts – rough drafts of calculations that the researchers compare to the sketches behind a famous manuscript. "This is like finding an early version of a well-known work," explains co-author Heather Hurst, director of the San Bartolo-Xultun Project. The oldest known records of the Maya calendar were already identified at this spot in 2012; some 1,200 years ago the room evidently served as a workshop and teaching space where mentors passed on their knowledge.
The formula itself is just as striking. It links the 260 days of the ritual calendar, the solar year and the cycles of Venus and Mars in a way that appears in no other Maya text. "It is a creative expression of mathematical thought," says epigrapher and co-author David Stuart of the University of Texas at Austin.
With that, a single mind of the Classic Maya era (250 to 900 CE) steps into the light – a thinker who can stand alongside the named reckoners of India, Mesopotamia, China and Greece. Published in the journal Antiquity, the study honours not just one person but the rich astronomical tradition of the Indigenous cultures of the Americas.
